The NIETC held it’s annual graduation on May 7 at the Airport Sheraton. Sixty three apprentices from the Limited Energy, Residential and Inside programs crossed the stage as a final statement completing their apprenticeship, and the beginning of the next segment of their careers. The evening was filled with laughter and good spirits as graduates ate, drank and exchanged experiences during the event.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful social hour and dinner followed by a few select speakers and then the main event of receiving their diplomas.

Following dinner, formal remarks by IBEW Business manager Clif Davis, and NECA Chapter Manager Tim Gauthier provided keynote addresses, emphasizing the values of hard work, positive attitude and responsibility. Roger Ferguson of Burndy was presented with the Industry Recognition award for over seven years of contribution to teaching apprenticeship classes on the proper methods of grounding and exothermic terminations.

Graduate awards for top GPA went to Jaimee Caruso for maintaining a 94.78 average for the 5 year inside program and Tim McKnight taking home top honors by accumulating a 97.3 average for the 4 year limited energy program. Both graduate received plaques as well as a set of Klein tools presented by Jim Amey of Robert Amey Co.

Following the honor awards Connie Ashbrook spoke about her experiences attending apprenticeship and the many events leading to her becoming the Executive Director of Oregon Tradeswomen Inc.

Graduate Jaimee Caruso then spoke to the crowd on behalf of the graduates summarizing the “apprenticeship experience” and adding stories about instructors and various unique experiences that all the graduate could relate to. Graduate certificates were handed out as the completers crossed the stage and they also picked up a special Leatherman tool and Carhart jacket. Platt Electric supply also provided a gift card to those in attendance.

The evening was brought to a close with comments by Oregon Chief electrical inspector Dennis Clements. Dennis recognized the value of education and the quality in which the program is famous for. As an instructor himself, he was able to relate with the feelings that encompassed the ballroom throughout the evening.

Thanks to all of you that have had an impact in an apprentices life, as now they begin to move into new roles in the industry, and pass on their experiences with the next wave of future graduates. Keep this in mind as you too have an effect on another person’s life daily. Let’s hope it is as positive as this event was for all that attended.
