The NECA-IBEW Electrical JATC offers a 2 1/2-year (as of June 1, 2008) Limited Residential Construction apprenticeship program that combines both on the job and related classroom training. Oregon-Columbia Chapter NECA and IBEW Local 48 sponsor this program.
If accepted into the apprentice program you will work for an electrical contractor for a minimum of 4000 OJT hours; there is no guarantee of 40 hours per week. You will complete a total of 5 terms of school; classes currently meet at the NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center.
A general description of work performed on the job includes the following categories:
Wiring of outlets in single & multiple family residences
Wiring services, meters and distribution
Wiring and servicing appliances
Remodeling of residential buildings
Installation of music, intercom systems and antennas
Wiring and servicing electric heat systems
Wiring and servicing air conditioning systems
Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of the current prevailing Limited Residential Construction Journeyman rate ($30.62 per hour effective 1-1-2019) in addition to benefits.
Apprentices are advanced to the next period only when all advancement requirements have been met. Upon completion of all program requirements apprentices are referred to take the Limited Residential Journeyman exam.
After graduation from the program, a Residential Journeyman Wireman will advance to a Master Residential Electrician classification following 4,000 hours worked as a Residential JW and provided the JW has both Oregon and Washington Residential or General Journeyman electricial licenses. Exception: If the contractor does not have a license to operate in both states, the Residential JW will not be required to have both state licenses to make the Master Classification at 4,000 hours. Step increases will include a one-dollar per hour base wage increase for every 1,000 hours worked toward the Master Residential Electricial Classification.
